Five photos

When the lovely Gemma tagged me in her "Five photos that make me smile" post, I ran my battery down to zero trying to work out how to select five photos from what must be the thousands I've uploaded over the last eight years. Eight years? How is that possible?

What was easy though, was what I wanted to represent. I know exactly what makes me smile...

Family
Nuclear, extended, blood, those I've acquired through marriage, those I've lost over the years and my god family - they all count. They all matter.
My wonderful, amazing family make me smile.
Even the crazies.
Especially the crazies!

Mr G
I found a goodun. I snared him. I'm keeping him. I'm not smiling because I'm married to him. I'm married to him because he always knows when and how to make me smile.
Always.

My friends
I wrote a long smushy post about this a while ago. Wow, how things have changed. Some of the faces have gone, new ones have arrived (hello WAGs, Dirty Thirties, Pineapple Club, work roomies old and new), but the sentiment still stands... that I am lucky beyond my wildest dreams to have the love, support and companionship of so many lovely people that are here, beside me because they want to be, not because they have to be (through marriage, blood or shared office space!)
My friends make me smile.
I hope I make them smile in return...

Opportunity
The world is my oyster.
I can go where I want. I can be who and what I want. I can believe what I want. I'm so lucky that I have choice, means, direction and support.
This photo represents two things - travel and work (yup, these days, my work makes me smile - check it here).  Traveling broadens horizons, I get to see, feel, experience new things. My job affords me the means to do that, but often presents opportunities (in this photo I was en route to Paris to start my secondment . One of the best things, ever. Ever!). Having a job that challenges me and surrounds me with inspiring people means I also have a reason to get up in the morning and take on the day. Having opportunities make me smile.

A place to call home
Opportunity, travel, the world is my oyster. But I have a place to call "home". I know I will always have somewhere to go. I know where home is. I know where I belong. I know where I'm safe. Somewhere to be still, calm, secure. I know that no matter what. No. Matter. What. I can go "home" and be welcomed, loved, nurtured and healed. It's not a place per se (though my family home and the home I bought and made great with Mr G make me very happy indeed), it's a feeling. A feeling not everyone is lucky enough to have and so I cherish it.
It makes me smile on the inside.

I suppose in the literal sense the effort I've put in to making our actual house full of fun, love, pretty, and parties also makes me smile.

Who was it that said "They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for"?

Don't say "Instagram"...! Whomever it was, I'm minded to agree.

So there we go - five pictures (yes I know I bent interpreted the rules slightly) that make me smile.

Thanks Gemma. YOU make me smile!

As an aside, this post has been a bit like therapy for me. I haven't blogged for a while as I lost a bit of my spark. I lost some people that I thought my spark depended on and I found it hard to articulate those feelings of hurt, loss and bewilderment without reference to that loss.

However, I've always tried to be grateful for what I do have rather than dwelling on what I don't (cough, Chanel handbag, cough), and I've just realised that this situation is no different.

So in writing this status-update-that-grew-in-to-a-blog-post post I managed to get it off my chest and get back in the game.

I've also been bonkers-mad-busy. Double busy.

So, now I'm back in the game* look out for a "catch up" post!

There'll be pictures. Lots. And they'll all make me smile.

Ciao

Desk Decor: Mood Mugs

Aside from the rather lovely extra-curricular activities I mentioned, last week at work was hideous. I shed my first work-related tear*. Just the one. I squidged it out of my left eye because if I didn't my head would have exploded from a fury-related aneurysm. I shouldn't have done it though, because, upon releasing that all that fury in a globule of salty water, thereafter that eye twitched like a dying moth until about 10pm.

What made it better though was that a colleague sent me a link to these little beauties. The plan for this week is that I'll keep these on my shelf and will select a mug each morning to reflect my mood. My room mates will then advise the office about when it's best to approach me with questions, work or problems.

I have one question though. Who is Larry, where does he work and why is he so happy about it? Ok, that was three questions.

I hate Larry.

* just to clarify, I have cried AT work, but not because OF work.

When can I be you?

me being the chick off the vodka menu at Revolution... or a lady bird. Either or.
I don’t really wish that I was anyone else but me, living any other life than my own, but every now and again, usually in the middle of my morning commute, I have a flicker of a fantasy and dream that I might be someone else*, some recent faves would be:
  1. The Duchess of Cambridge – well, obvs. Who wouldn’t want to have walked down that aisle in that dress on that day? And I bet even she sits there sometimes dreaming of wearing that crown
  2.  P.Middy – see above.
  3. Nigella/Kirstie (interchangeable in my head) – because they make being a domestic goddess look so fabulous and fun. In reality it is neither!
  4. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – uh, you’ve seen her, right?
  5. Holly Willobooby – because I would love to just sit and chat on a sofa all day, with Phil, in pretty dresses, and get paid for it. Oh, and also because I would like to be besties with Fearne!
Ask me on a different day and I’m likely to give you another name, based on the book I’m reading, the magazine I’m flicking through or what I’m watching on telly.  Sometimes fantasy world is way more fun than the real world. Only sometimes though!
To counter the above I would also like to tell you about people I am glad that I’m not…
Well, firstly, the above
  1. Can you imagine the pressure? Jeez. I bet she just wants to put on a hoodie put her hair in a messy pony and pop round to her mate’s for a cuppa. Unlucky. Also, one word – Diana!
  2. The most famous “second prize” in the world.
  3. What if they just want to eat a pot noodle? Or buy a wardrobe from Ikea?
  4. Imagine trying to change careers from “gorgeous bit” to “talented actress” or “UN  Ambassador” or “political candidate”…
  5. Hmmmm – I can see no negatives here. oh... I didn't plan that one very well did I?
And a few others:
  1. Angelina Jolie – she looks so flipping stressed out. Chill out. Eat biscuits. Get a baby sitter. Crack a god damn smile
  2. Victoria Beckham – give her a break
  3. Lady Gaga – how would I admire her if I was her (this also goes for Madonna)
  4. Gwyneth Paltrow – the most boring woman in the world? What I would do with her life if I could get my hands on it...
  5. Kate Moss – she must be flipping knackered! I bet she’s gagging for a lie down and a detox
  6. Lindsay Lohan – one word: whoops
  7. Britney Spears – I mean, no one likes getting up and going to work, but at least when I’m having a “I hate my job” day I don’t have millions of people looking at me expecting me to be something I was ten years ago
  8. Cheryl Cole – someone give that girl a hug
  9. Winona Ryder – loo. laa.
  10. Jennifer Aniston – Great body, great hair, great comic timing – great big fat ex splashed all over the papers every day with his new bird and their 25 kids. Mmmmmmmotivational!
So there you go kids. Be true to yourself, the grass isn’t always greener, be who you are and be happy in your own skin… or some other kind of motivational message. Being rich/gorgeous/famous/the future Queen isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…

* Please note that this is different to girl crushes! You can’t have a girl crush on yourself now, can you?

Festive, erm, "fashion"?

Seeing as it’s Christmas, and novelty fair isle jumpers are all over the pages of every magazine I pick up, I feel I should be allowed to go a bit bonkers on the “Yuletide style” as well. As I already picked up a novelty snowflake cardy (complete with snowball pom poms) a little while back I thought I'd add a few more items to my festive wardrobe.

I do love a novelty jumper, and in my office we do have a bit of a thing for clothing featuring animals (who knows why, we just do!) so this week I went a bit crazy for canine-themed jumpers, specifically this Dalmatian jumper from Oasis and a sausage dog jumper from Dotty P. I'm sorry to say that both are sold out now. Sad face. I know you were all desperate to dress up in animal-themed clothing, just like me!

I was also super excited for December to finally get going as it meant I could get all my sparkles, sequins and glitter out.

I purchased this gold and black stripey jumper dress for one of my work Christmas parties on impulse in the Oasis sale, and wore it sixties style with some dangly earrings and a baby beehive (I went black tie for the second party so I felt I could be a bit more informal with this one). It was a bit of a risk as the shop is right under the office and so there was a very high chance that at least three other people would turn up wearing the same thing. I got lucky though! I also got my sequins out in Budapest (review coming soon!) with this skirt from Matalan, some ankle boots and a sparkly jumper, again from Oasis. Oh, not forgetting the ever-present accessory - the cocktail/glass of fizz.

I also got a bit Advantage Card-happy during a Supermarket Sweep session in Boots. I snaffled some Rimmel glitter top coat, a lovely iridescent rose gold, that looks rather opulent over the top of a deep, but shimmery, purple, I also got my (super-glittery) hands on some Barry M gold glitter dust (I’ve been obsessed with these for years for big butterfly eye make up), some blue and some gold glitter liquid eyeliner and a gold glitter eye crayon. I don’t care what the beauty experts say, I’m loving gold glittery eyes with deep, matte raspberry lips or pale glossy lips and some big pouffy hair. Festive festive festive!

However I think my favourite festive purchase this year, has been my crazy, disco-fabulous holly leaf-green, glitter sandals from ASOS. Highly impractical and unlikely to ever see the light of day after this week, I just love them and all their green, glittery gorgeousness.

I was finding it difficult to match them with anything, so I gave in to my “colour clash” urges and wore them with a royal blue dress, and seeing as blue and green should never be seen without another colour in between I wore opaque black tights... and again, found a brightly coloured cocktail to pull it all together!

I realise that there’s a lot of glitter, sequins and sparkly thread here, so, in the interest of health and safety I won’t wear it all at once, and I will steer clear of naked flames!
xoxo
P.S. Sadly I didn't get any pictures of my black tie do, although there were no sequins involved, so that's probably why I didn't bother! Booooooring!

A day in the life

The other day I was reading a “day in the life” feature in Stylist Magazine (page 18, Issue 103) about a glamorous lady with my dream job. She was a wedding planner with a well known company organising overseas weddings, with astronomical budgets and fantastic event briefs. It made me want to weep. However, what upset me more was reading about her glamorous “working day”. She even made menial tasks like visiting the gym or ordering takeaway sound thrilling. Now, I realise that these features about the subject’s working day are a bit more Hotel Babylon (i.e. an amalgamation of numerous different scenarios and mashed together in to one 24 hour period, rather than every day being that exciting) than reality, but still – it made me think about my working day and I realised that, no matter what job I have (and, having done some bl00dy awful jobs in my time, I now actually have a very good, interesting and varied job at a rather important company,) I’ll never be that glam, together or fabulous. And here’s why….
A day in the life of Victoria
I wake up after sleeping through a structured pattern of four alarms and snoozing two further alarms (strategically set to surprise me. They don’t), and make myself presentable for the day (some days I’m more presentable than others). I run to the end of the road, only to see the bus drive past me Saved by the Bell-style, five minutes earlier than the scheduled time. I then wait for 25 minutes until the next one arrives (it should have been only five minutes behind the previous one, but we all know buses operate in a parallel time universe). Of course, two arrive almost at the same time, so I look at the capacity. One is full to bursting and the other is almost empty. I choose the empty one. Obviously. 2.5 minutes later I realise why it’s empty. It veers off at the roundabout to head through all the little windy residential streets… and pauses to pick up about twenty OAPs at each stop and, what looks like the entire mailing list for the Chelmsford WI Christmas party. They all seem to know each other and I realise that I’ve just caught the Senior Citizens express coach on OAP discount day in town. They all jostle in calling out “mornings” and “wotchas” to their friends, and me. I then sit wedged between Aggie and Flo as they bellow up and down the bus, much like the school kids and college student on my usual bus, in fact. I cringe at comments being yelled about by slightly deaf old ladies, including: "Janet, what you wearing to Dot's 90th birthday party on Saturday?" and "Joan, are you going straight to Tesco?" (Joan isn’t, she’s: "got to pick up some brown silk for [her] hedgehog at the market first ” and she brandishes a half-finished piece of tapestry at her mate three rows back). They crack some old-people jests back and forth, whilst Flo nudges as if I'm in on the joke. I consider buying eye cream – she clearly thinks I'm her contemporary.
I finally reach the station, and I fling myself off the bus, negotiate the ticket barriers with the skill of a British Olympic relay baton change (so not great, then!), sprint up the stairs, jump on the train (bit of long jump action), but before sitting down I double check that it’s calling at my stop. I discover it’s not just as the door alarm is going. I throw myself off the train and on to the platform in a manner that can only be described as Indiana Jonesesque. I wait for the next train, chatting to the station master he feels sorry for me, and offers me a cup of tea. I decline as I already have a grande soya latte on the go. Also, what is it with people treating me like I’m about to start drawing my pension? Finally my train crawls in, I board and spend 25 minutes catching up on emails and the day’s GroupOn discounts.
On arriving at Stratford I disembark and head, with Commuter-Style purpose, towards the Jubilee Line. On seeing me walk with such intent, I’m stopped by various tourists, looking for the entrance to Westfield, damn these shoppers getting in the way of commuter time. I act out various scenes from the Benny Hill show walking backwards and forwards between platform 14, 13 and 15 with increasing levels of fury, before repeating the Indiana Jones move to board a tube (this could be a post all on its own!), which then gets stuck in a tunnel due to a “person under a train” at the next station. I avoid pulling a Jeremy Clarkson and just return to my book.
And then I hear a funny scratching sound.
I look to my left and on the seat next to me is a cat. In true London commuter style I had my Tube Blinkers on and hadn’t noticed my feline commuting companion until now.  Another standard tube journey.
I reach my destination, sprint up the stairs (at which point someone I don’t know points right in my face and says to her friend “that girl works in my office” – I choose to take the word “girl” as a compliment after the morning’s WI invite) and in to the office.
I spend the morning eating kid's cereal (today it was Coco Pops) straight from the box (no time for bowls – I’m busy busy busy), drinking tea, answering emails, doing work stuff (I do do some work!) and try not to make my boss wince with embarrassment, shake her head in disbelief or cringe with mortification as I tend to do something embarrassing at least once a day. Until now, my embarrassing moment highlights include:
·    Asking the most senior person in my firm (a man who is on the Prime Minister’s speed dial, who has met the Queen, was quoted daily in the broadsheets and regularly rubs shoulders with world and business leaders) whilst at a high profile event, in a high profile building, if he’d “found the hidden beaver”.  Now in my defence, there is a perfectly logical explanation, and I’m entirely innocent of any ill meaning. Unfortunately my boss, her boss and various other senior industry statesmen, did not see the well-intended meaning… There was a lot of wine pouring out of noses I recall.
·    Accidentally hiring a stripper for one of the team’s Christmas parties (again, it was a complete misunderstanding!), when our new global director had only been at the firm for four days. Needless to say, he’s always going to remember my name… and the look on my face as I implored the poor girl to keep her bra on – just before she pinged it across the room at me.
·    Offering my shoes to our general manager to smell. Again, it was entirely innocent (they were Vivienne Westwood Melissa Lady Dragon PVC shoes, scented with strawberry), but I’m not sure the sentiment came across in the way it was intended… he also has sons, and so wouldn’t have understood quite how important they were in the shoe world anyway, even if he had had a sniff.
Lunchtime arrives and I make my way to the restaurant where diligently avoid the healthy and grown up food – heading straight to the ”build your own”  fish finger sandwich on the “credit crunch lunch” station, and tell myself that the healthy eating plan will start next Monday. As will my visits to the gym. For definite.
We are lucky enough to have a free gym and swimming pool in the building. I am however not lucky enough to have the body of a super model and so I choose not to get in to a bikini in front of my colleagues. I stopped going to the fully clothed parts of the gym as well when I had to dry my hair next a person who was using the adjacent hairdryer, wearing nothing but a pair of black court shoes (hygiene first – no one wants a verucca, do they?). I later saw her in a meeting.
The afternoon then consists of trying to get done everything I didn’t do in the morning (i.e. most things) and striving to be the best “making problems go away executive” I can be (joke: that’s not my job title, it’s just what most of my internal clients think it is!).
Hometime quite often sees me do the Canary Wharf Dash – a well navigated route around a pre-defined number of shops to collect all the things I need for that evening’s food/entertainment/sofa surfing and then, if I’m not heading in to the City to meet people for cocktails (I like to do this a LOT) or attending/running some kind of event, I will do my earlier commute but in reverse, and at a slightly slower pace, and with slightly less patience. I flick through a magazine and come across a write up about a person who has a job/coat/bank balance/complexion that I envy and I slump in my seat like a sulky child.
When I finally make it home, whether it’s straight from work or late at night after an event I am OCD about the day’s make up coming off. Even if I’m painfully drunk and end up asleep in the bath… which doesn’t happen often, but has been known. If I’m lucky Mr G will be there for snuggles. If not I fall asleep fantasising about winning the lottery, opening my own vintage tea shop/wedding planning business/florist/make up salon/global five star hotel reviewing consultancy and the days that teleportation will be invented so I can transport myself to work and back in the blink of an eye.  However, with my current ongoing eye-twitch, I probably wouldn’t be spending too much time at work, so maybe that’s not a good thing!
And if anyone was going to get splinched (my HP buddies will understand that one!)  whilst teleporting to work, you know it’d be me!
###
So there you go. A standard day in the life of Me. No matter what job I have, the promotions and projects that may come my way, I will never be that glossy chick who commutes in heels, pops to the gym for a 5k run at lunch before snacking on oat cakes and homemade sushi and then ticking off everything on her to do list and leaving work on time to head back to her immaculate home to make her husband something wholesome and intricate for dinner. I’ll always be a bit dishevelled, out of breath, sweaty, missing some part of my (originally well thought out) outfit and definitely not glossy!
I will however work hard, deliver the best I can, at what is actually a bloody good job, as things go, these days! I will have fun whilst I’m doing it and I will be grateful for everything that I have. I might look harassed and I will say something excruciatingly embarrassing but hey, if I was perfect what would I have to daydream about when I get stuck on the train?
And I’ll leave you with this thought: Recently I was signed up to be a mentor to a gifted student from a local college.
That’s probably not going to pan out quite as she hoped, eh? ;-)

Millions

Seeing as the last two days have seen the big cosmic fruit machine in the sky cash out for me three times (don't get too excited!), I couldn’t help but do my usual and start thinking about what I’d actually do if I won the Lottery. You know when you start thinking about it and you almost convince yourself that it’s ACTUALLY going to happen and so you start stressing about the consequences of your newly-minted actions.
Even though you don’t have a ticket?
Well, yeah, I did that. It meant that I laid in bed wide awake for a long while last night deciding what I’d name the tea shop I’d buy (still undecided, more sleepless nights ahead), whether it was too patronising to treat all my friends and family to a massive group holiday (I think they’d be ok with it!) and whether I’d bother to work my notice or not (keeping that one to myself!).
So what would my first five purchases be?
1.       A family home with a dining table to seat 20 – then I’d commission a massive lazy-Susan so that Diana couldn’t hog all the roast potatoes at the other end.
2.       A white convertible BMW 1 series with pale gold leather interior - I’m an Essex girl, what can I say? Although once I’d come to terms with my squillions then I’d buy a fleet of Aston Martins, a few Land Rovers in an array of colours to match my mani-pedis, a VW camper van an old E Type Jag and a cream vintage Beetle!
3.       A white leather Chanel 2.55 flap bag with platinum chain detail – to go on the passenger seat of my new Essex girl car. Obvs.
4.       A pretty little tea shop – I’d fill it with wait staff in 50s-style uniforms, retro, imaginative cupcakes, genuine vintage china and atmospheric tunes. I’d park my pretty little car outside, put my pretty little handbag over my shoulder and waltz in for a pretty little cupcake and chats with my pretty little besties.
5.       An Ibizan villa.
And then I’d totally buy world peace by paying Jason Bourne to go out, round up all the nasty war-mongering bastards out there, tie them up and put them in a well until they can learn to be friends. I’d also pay him to put Mark Wright and Spencer from MIC in there too.
In fact, that's complete fantasy. We all know there's no way I could make big decisions like that without at least two months of email discussions with my (long-suffering) besties and colleagues, deliberating all possible decisions and options. So in the meantime the first five things I'd buy would be Grazia magazine, that skirt I put back in Ted Baker as I couldn't afford it (in the sale), Essie nail varnish (they last like, years), a new digital camera (I've just broken mine) and another pair of those comfy Next wedges (I couldn't afford the pink and the green last month)...
Sweet millionaire dreams

Doo yoou YooMoo? I doo.

Things that make me smile a little less than last week:
  • Personal admin. It sucks. I procrastinate. It gets worse. I procrastinate more. I eat bags and bags of fizzy cola bottles and my tongue bleeds so I have to have a lay down, and then find very interesting things to watch on telly (I used to be fat, World’s strictest parents, Bargain Hunt), and I invent household chores that just must be done instead. Which shows you just how much I hate admin, because I hate chores, muchly!
  • Parking fines. Grrrrrr.
  • Parking fines, specifically from parking at the gym. As if it wasn’t hard enough to motivate myself already – now if I spend too long in there I get fined £80. Encouraging no?
  • Being unable to find the shoes I want to complete my last wedding outfit. I’ve bought five pairs so far this week and returned four…
  • One pair of Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragons in pink PVC with peach heart detail on the toe. I just didn’t love them as much as my trusty blue and red ones so they went back. Not before I offered them to our general manager for a sniff. They smell of bubblegum, OBVS!
  • A pair of lovely corally-pink almond toe platforms. They had such potential. Turned out to be stripper shoes. Bleurgh.
  • Red suede almond toe courts. Red shoes no knickers. That is all.
  • Pink suede courts. Identical to my existing Louboutins. Unjustifiable.
  • So, come oooooon, SamCam’s nude, suede t-bar sandals from the Royal Wedding. I’m counting on you!
  • Nicky Gee working all over the long weekend. Poo bums.
  • Geordie Shore*. I know I'm going to get as addicted to this as I am to TOWIE and MIC, but the problem with this one is that I've only just weaned myself off the Cheryl Cole intonation and turn of phrase after the last series of X Factor ended in December. Now, my "head voice" has a Geordie accent.** I can't stop saying my name as "Vic-ee" with Chezza's accent. Damn them!
  • Having an office-based job. Hate having to sit inside during sunny afternoons whilst my stalkbook friends post pictures of paddling pools and sun-drenched gardens. (However in the winter I will be mucho grateful for my office-based job so I retain the right to alter this one)
  • Generally just not being a millionaire. Being a millionaire would solve all of the above. Almost.

However… in the event of not being a millionaire and needing a means to solve my utter distress at all of the above, I stuffed my face with pomegranate Yoo Moo in all it’s 99% fat-free glory. Smothered in chocolate buttons, mini marshmallows, fudge pieces, brownie bites and gummi bears (yes, proper ones). It’s amazing that something so yummy is just so good for you….
But at the end of the day, it could be worse. Everything I touch could turn in to Skittles.
Night night YooMooers
x

* my thoughts on this coming soon... but to start with "spoonin' turns in ter forkin' dunnit?" Amazeballs!

** Everyone has a "head voice" right?
